Curriculum

Choosing a career in the pet styling profession offers opportunities and flexibility nationwide. Whether you decide to be self-employed or work for others, you have the choice of working in a salon, boarding kennel, veterinary clinic, mobile grooming unit or grooming in other people’s homes. The opportunity to succeed in this recession-proof industry is possible because the demand for well-qualified pet stylists is far greater than the supply. The demand has created exceptional opportunities for people who love animals. The Golden Paws instructional pet styling program  breaks down each step in the grooming process so the student learns quickly the styling skills needed to create beautifully-finished breed designs or customize any style your customer desires.

We provide you with professional-grade grooming tools, teach you proper tool usage to develop high-quality pet styling skills and how to apply those skills to satisfy the needs of your clients. We maintain the highest standards in quality teaching, professionalism and the care of pets using the most up-to-date equipment and methods.

Our rolling enrollment allows you to join a class at the beginning of any week as long as there is a table available.

Professional Dog Styling (300 Clock Hours):

This program is broken down into 3 courses:   Prepping 101, Bathing & Drying 102 and Styling 103.  While each course has individual components, they build upon one another.  Once the students have learned to do prep work, bathing and drying they will continue to work on them throughout the program while they are completing the styling course.

Prepping 101:  This course covers the foundations of dog grooming, including:

    • Anatomy
    • Behavior & Handling Skills
    • Tooth and Ear Care
    • Nail clipping & grinding
    • Tools and their proper usage
    • Sanitary clip
    • Clipping pads

Bathing & Drying 102:  This course covers the following:

  • Skin conditions
  • Choosing the correct shampoo for skin and coat, therapeutic shampoos
  • Parasites
  • Bathing procedures and techniques
  • Drying techniques for different coat types
  • Anal gland expulsion
  • De-matting and de-shedding
  • Safety procedures

Styling 103:  This is our finish work and includes:

  • The natural
  • All over clip
  • The wet clip
  • The 4 major breed styles: poodle, teddy, sporting & long-legged terrier
  • Customer communication
  • Comb attachments, blades and skimming
  • Scissoring and fine finish techniques
  • Thinning shear techniques

This program runs full time for 8 weeks, M-F, 8:30 am-4:30 pm or part time for 20 weeks, Sundays 9 am-4:30 pm and Tuesday/Wednesday evening, 5:30 pm-9:30 pm.  Successful Completion of 101, 102 & 103 is necessary to receive a State-approved certificate.


Professional Dog Bathing (80 clock hours, 11 ½ Days):

This program will prepare you to professionally bath and dry dogs, which is the foundation for dog styling.  In this program we will cover:

  • Anatomy

  • Tools and their proper usage

  • Clipping pads
